EMCORE’s solar cells manufactured at its facility in the Sandia Science & Technology Park (SS&TP) were onboard the last Space Shuttle mission. A NASA funded experiment included a panel with two large-area EMCORE Inverted Metamorphic Multi-junction (IMM) solar cells onboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis when it launched earlier in July.

NASA and the Aerospace Corporation believe that these cells are the highest efficiency solar cells ever launched into space. The panel was jettisoned from the Shuttle’s cargo bay into a low-earth orbit before Atlantis’ return flight back to Earth.
